Mentally ill person can take a SMS-loan in Estonia

Fast loan companies do not check their clients’ active legal capacity, which is why many mentally ill persons have taken SMS-loans, Eesti Ekspress writes.

When about 5 pct of Estonia’s population has taken SMS-loan, then the percentage is much higher among mentally ill persons.

One psychiatrist said nearly half of her patients have taken SMS-loan and many of her patients have utility and telephone debts.

“Often young men, whose expectations to life are much bigger than reality, take such loans,” Erika Saluveer, psychiatrist in the Põhja-Eesti regional hospital psychiatric clinic said and added that this is a serious problem. ´

Because loan burden often falls to relatives’ or families’ shoulders, they often turn to psychiatrist in hope that borrower will be divest of active legal capacity and therefore they don’t have to pay the loan back.

I have this maybe naive idea that since Estonia is in the EU, then EU law and principles are used in Estonia. I often feel like I am in a 3rd world country with expensive prices and their own separate system of justice.

Bill, are there any constitutional rights in Estonia effective?

So far, the court decisions I have heard about smells like to better not trust in them.

We have to get used with it, that Estonia is a deffective democracy, like Latvia and Russia.

Even if it is not that worse than in those two other countries I mentioned.

knut/ 'Legally ill means usually to be mental disabled by over 50%.' I forgot to add, there are people legally considered 100% mentally ill,by doctors and a review board, and they are still walking around in society. You can stand on a street corner, drool/slobber, twitch, talk to yourself and 'get answers ' from the invisible person in your mind, and appear like a total 'space case', but 'if you are not a threat to yourself or others, then you are not institutionalized' because there is no urgency.
