Let's help Team Estonia win 10 medals from Rio

I'm not sure showing up at a business meeting and saying "Hey, I brought along Heiki Nabi, the silver medal winner for 120kg Greco-Roman Wrestling in 2012" will do much. The Estonian olympians aren't very well-known outside Estonia, compared to Usain Bolt, Jessica Ennis, or Michael Phelps.

The idea to get corporate sponsors more involved in the olympic program is good though. The US Olympic Committee receives no money from the US taxpayer -- it's all privately funded. Reply to the comment answer

Stubb is an idiot. Finland has won most medals per capita. If there is a slump at sport than so what. Reply to the comment answer

I remember when Erki Nool won gold and was given a small chunk of cash, and I asked myself why is Estonia only prepared to reward success rather than invest in it?

It seems ludicrous that Estonian world championship skiers have to beg for sponsorship rather than receive assistance from the State. Sport is the best PR tool that some nations have to break the cycle of international ignorance and the Estonian Government continue to look inwardly rather than think expansively on this issue.
Estonia is blessed with many physically strong athletes that could with help, be a force on the international stage. But they need investment in facilities, and more importantly access to good quality coaching, the latter of which is not available in mainstream sports in Estonia.
The success of Team BG at the olympics is not a fluke. 20 years ago we were lagging behind everyone in athletics, cycling and swimming and many other amateur sports. Lottery funding has changed that around, has helped us develop exceptional sportsmen and sportswomen all of which have performed on the world stage and helped build a better perception of this country.
Estonia has the potential to do exactly the same as they possess a youth that is fit and desperate to find their position in the global community.
I realise that estonia has only 1.3 million, but if you take out the overweight and unfit Brits from the equation, I bet we the British don't have that many to choose from either!
So come on Eeesti Government, start investing in the potential that Estonia has and give some youngsters the chance to shine and make Estonians proud of their country on the sports field. Reply to the comment answer

Perhaps Eesti needs to start juicing its sportsmen up good ol soviet style. To my understanding USSR pumped its athletes full of substances which were to banned than but are today.

Having had the (mis) fortune of working with the Estonian Olympic Committee it is a miracle any sport survives. They pull the strings on any official sporting body in Estonia and unless your name is Gerd Kanter you can forget about receiving any cash through IOC grants and assistance.
