Tallinn Airport shelves plan to build a new terminal

Isn't it a bit risky to base the decisions about whether to build a terminal on the plans of one airline, especially when that airline is known for making hasty decisions?

Maybe I'm just used to US airports, but Tallinn Airport has never seemed full to me. They have 3 baggage carousels and I've never seen more than 2 in use. Does the airport get overcrowded at certain times of day? I'm usually there in the early mornings (7am) and I've never noticed it. Reply to the comment answer

Well said, ameeriklane. The only explanation coming to my mind why this is planned is because of to collect subsidies from the EU once again.

Crowds at Tallinn airport?
I thought was the whole point of flying from Tallinn. There aren't any!

The whole airport is known for under-use particularly in freight.

I mean what can any airport do with just ONE runway?
All very well having 2 terminals, but no excess capacity and no space to expand into, and then who in their right mind wants to fly to Tallinn anyhow? Reply to the comment answer

Listen, you ignoramus. Try to read ALL the articles so you don't come off as such a git. Freight and passenger numbers are up, up, up over recent years.

What are you on about?

Freight is just a total MESS at Tallinn airport! UP?
What on earth are you talking about.

Only TWO companies fly freight there>neither of them are based in Tallinn and far from going up, they are going down!

Not even Air France cargo delivers to the region any more, and they used to share that with Helsinki.

International freight into Estonia is a complete shambles and it's not getting better.
Try using an air freight service some day instead of waffling rubbish!

No one uses Estonia for freight these days anymore, if it's not about its domestic market or as a transit hub from Russia, Ukraine, Belarus to Scandinavia.

But for freight from east to west, it is much cheaper to go thourgh, say, Poland.

And that's not even limited to cargo deliveries by aeroplane.

The transportation costs per kilometer with Estonian logistics is well above the 1 EUR mark. I get even cheaper rates in Germany, who has higher variable costs and higher price of gasoline.

Only delivery via vessel still makes some economic sense, but then there is still no need for docking in Muuga for most delivery routes.

By truck, I meant.

I've been there pretty much at all times of the day and it's never crowded. I think around 8AM and 5PM there is a bit of a "rush" with many Estonian Air planes leaving around the same time, but other than that it's extremely quiet :).

However, commenting on the comment about "what can you do with one runway": I believe Riga has 5 miljon passengers with just one runway :). Reply to the comment answer
