"Large-scale fraud"??? In Scientific circles that 60,000 is chicken feed when it comes to hundreds or even millions of Euros to finance cutting edge research projects, especially in the sciences. In trying to net a whale, this prosecutor and the Tartu insider with a grudge (these kind of charges are often spawned by Professors who are fueled by jealousy), have only netted two anchovies. I predict they will be exonerated and charges will be dropped. Tartu University is fine University with Faculty and Research Scientists who have been recognized around the World for their research. Hopefully, Tartu University will continue to write grants and receive funds to help attract researchers from around the World to perform ground breaking research. Reply to the comment answer

The numbers on research funding were not easy to come by, and the latest I could find was 2010, but as I understand the report, Tartu University received around 4.15mln EUR in grants to fund research in 2010. So 60k EUR would be about 1.4% of the entire research grants for Tartu University -- not huge, but not small either.

As far as I can tell, research in Estonian universities is all funded through the Estonian Research Council (ETAG), so I got the data from their 2010 annual report.

If you guys think it is bad in Estonia than check out Russia, Ukraine or Greece for instance. At least Estonian professors do not yet openly sell degrees to the highest bidder. At least this is according to my sources. You try to buy degree at Tartu and they would lock you up. Not if you are a multimillionaire probably but how many foreign multimillionaires would visit Estonia just to buy a degree. That would simply be pathetic.
