Demanding only 3 months for trying to hire an assassin. If the dirty deed had been carried out, what would they have given him then? Maybe 6 months for being a really naughty boy! Reply to the comment answer

Yeah 3 months seems like a minor deterrent at most.

There was a well-publicized case in Florida where a wife hired a hitman (undercover cop) to kill her husband. She was sentenced to 20 years:

Yeah, as I say its a no more than a 'slap on the wrist' and don't be a naughty boy in the future!
~cheapaschips [18.04.2012, 16:23]
Yeah, this country could use some more American-style justice. These light penalties are NO deterent whatsoever.
~Hang'em High [18.04.2012, 22:06]
American-Style justice as deterrence? Why is there still crime, even the US has the highest rate of prisoners for every 1000 inhabitants? (7,41 per 1000)? Shouldnt all criminals already be in jail for decades? Denmark has 0,7 per 1000 and a more liberal way (Estonia with 3,4 is in between). May be there are other reasons than penalty style? But of course after one punishment, ex-cons become honest and respected members of the society:)

If we're talking about murder or conspiracy for murder (aka hiring a hitman), I think wielding American style justice is justifiable. After-all they'll only lock Breivik away for max 21 years if unconvincingly found guilty as a max punishment. 77 people murdered - "Max" 21 years in prison. That's liberal justice for you. If this guy was convicted back home - He'd have to have a visit with "Olde Sparky".

Of course, this guy in Estonia. He'd be charged with something like conspiracy to commit 1st degree attempted murder. In essence pre-meditated murder using a contract killer. He should at least get 10 years for that, and plenty more if it actually happened.

Denmark is an exceptional case, of course - the "overall" quality of life is generally better for the people than back in the US. That is the beauty of the liberal system. But, the Americans who would commit such crimes are too stupid to really care anyway about the consequences of their actions.

Its not a question of using capital punishment as a deterrent, but more as an act of justice to whoever pre-meditatively murdered anyone. Of course, Amnesty International would say different. They're just a bunch of pansies. I don't understand why "its right" for a sick-o killer to get away with violating human rights of an innocent person, when its more convenient to just execute him and not have to waste our tax-dollars on their prison term.

Here they just release them after 6 months and say "eh, its okay" he's a better person now. HAHA... right...

I agree 100%. Regarding capital punishment, the death penalty is the best solution to recidivism out there. I challenge any liberal to show me anything more effective.

Damn, this just might encourage people to start hiring if the sentence is so ridiculously low! Reply to the comment answer

Do you think the tax authorities will look into tax evasion for possible services rendered? Do gunmen list themselves as sole traders, and if so under what heading will you find them in the Yellow pages?
~cheapaschips [18.04.2012, 20:33]
perhaps (soon) under 'Hitman OU',
~expat [18.04.2012, 21:12]
I think the tax authorities are already on it on different locations:

It's not about deterrent, it's about making the punishment fit the crime. That's one of the oldest principles in the book and yet it seems to be beyond the ken of most Estonians. Reply to the comment answer

until the children of the Estonian adults, raised during Soviet Occupation, all die off, in 50 more years or so, this will still be backwards ''country''. If you really think this is EU country, go live in any Western European country for a few weeks and return here and you will see how backwards and pathetic this place is. Reply to the comment answer

I see the same type of retards in Western European countries. To a lesser extent, though.
~knut albers [20.04.2012, 11:28]
Shall we go live in the Arabic suburbs of Paris or the enclaves of Luton?
~@ [20.04.2012, 12:03]
It's all a matter of perspective. Sure, you can compare the rundown ghettos of southeast LA, or the post-industrial sectors of Detroit to Manhattan or mid-town Seattle, but is that reasonable? It certainly isn't accurate.

The social strata will change in time, but no matter where you go, somebody is backwards, and in many cases it can be individuals (as this case) or the law (as in this case too), and especially politics. Time will tell. This retardation is everywhere.
~Other Ameeriklane [20.04.2012, 12:57]
Big Government is also everywhere these days.
