Do these idiots think they have money to burn. China is one big bubble. Morons should focus on improving the living conditions of the poor Chinese like farmers instead of wasting money to unproductive Volvo or Estonia. Reply to the comment answer

We just knew that esti=NO and his alter ego would have a stroke over this bit of news.
~Predictable [13.09.2012, 16:42]
Nothing else to say, eh propaganda guy. Why don't you go "motivate" young eesti clowns for their next trip to economic paradise Afghanistan. We all know that China, Eesti, Afghanistan and Iraq are highly developed countries. Bush said so, as did the Italian and French geniuses who ran worlds financial institutions.
~sure pally [13.09.2012, 17:53]
What do you see wrong with a 130 million euro investment here in Estonia? This country needs more of such things.
~@sure pally [14.09.2012, 14:04]
It is not I who see it as wrong. It is those Chinese farms who might see something wrong about money going abroad when their villages would badly need investments. I guess I'm just a humanist thinking eesti people have EU for support. No need to take Chinese cash.
~not I [14.09.2012, 23:47]
This is a business investment, not support. You do know the difference, don't you? Regarding the Chinese farmers: Do you really think they know anything about their country's foreign investments? Information is tightly controlled there and order is kept through brute force. It is still a very communist country after all in the political and control sense.
~@not I [15.09.2012, 11:40]
Those han Chinese extremists don't want to help out "a non-indo european people". Keep telling yourself that.
~rightt [15.09.2012, 20:25]
The EU would like that China supports them. Just ago there was a meeting with this theme in Brussels. Merkel also spoke with the now leaving Chinese leader. Listen more foreighn radio or watch more foreighn TV, or read more foreighn newspapers in the web, and you wouldn´t miss it.
~scheileke [29.09.2012, 06:42]
A business investment is NOT support. You are starting to sound like esti=NO.
~@scheileke [29.09.2012, 10:00]
I said, "the EU would like, that China supports them by: putting money into the fond, what is called ESM, for example. Investments are asside. This is the difference.
There had been allready talks behind closed doors about this theme (Tagesthemen ARD and Kompakt WDR). China answered not directly with "yes", but is in the future interested in.
~scheileke [30.09.2012, 11:33]
I am still every time astonished, how null-informated common Estonians are. You really read only Postimees and Maaleht, eh? And a little bit "The Economist"?
How can you build yourself a statement? Threwing small bones in the air, and if they reach ground you read them?

Ok I understand the reason to make wood pellets in Estonia. Pellets are low value relative to weight, so shipping is a high percentage of costs.

But windmill production? These are very high-ticket items, such that freight is only a minor cost. Do the Chinese think they can do this more cheaply in Estonia vs China, or is this being done for some other reason? Reply to the comment answer

Just a few days ago some EU Brussels branch (the Comission I think) announced investigation into price dumping of solar panels (of course to protect German manufaterers) and will most likely implement new import tolls - guess the chinese want to counter that. Sounds similar to how the japs started manufactoring (read: assembly) of cars in the States for the same reason a couple of decades ago ...
~bluecowboy [14.09.2012, 13:46]
Missed to mention, the investigation into price dumping was not only of solar panels but also windmills.
~bluecowboy [14.09.2012, 13:49]
"Ok I understand the reason to make wood pellets in Estonia."

I am actually not so optimistic on this - in the long term.

There will be still high demand for wood pellets for some time, but sunflower husk pellets get more and more popular each year. They are cheaper than wood ones, moreover they could be used (even more effectively) instead of gas and coal which pollute environment and get more and more expensive.

The problem is that Estonia here is in geographical disadvantage as sunflowers can not grow here efficiently.

Thinking about this article more closely, my guess is this was just some loosely-worded memorandum of understanding. The agreement was signed between the Chinese company and Enterprise Estonia, which is basically a government organization. Then, there are not details like exactly what will be produced, in what volume, and where.

So I think this announcement lacks much "teeth" and is very preliminary.

Here is a trip down memory lane of some other Chinese investments lauded by the Estonian authorities:

(2009) "Economist: China has expressed interest to buy Estonian Air"
http://www.bbn.ee/Default.aspx?PublicationId=7219a6ce-58a9-4efd-8fb3-46375c9cc6d8

(2009) "Chinese seek takeover targets in Estonia"
http://www.bbn.ee/Default.aspx?PublicationId=54f033e4-90bf-49ce-8110-70cbcf7f58f3

(2010) "Tallinn Airport CEO: we are talking to two Chinese airlines"
http://www.bbn.ee/Default.aspx?PublicationId=2e35dfc4-1572-4c6d-a7d3-ac88eba35203

(2011) "Estonians take over container terminal project after the Chinese pull out"
http://www.bbn.ee/Default.aspx?PublicationId=f66983f9-5a40-406f-8046-cebad278d91c

So let's see if anything actually comes out of this announcement. Reply to the comment answer

It would be a big win though (for Estonia). However, I agree that I preferably would read about actual wins, not just about "plans," "talks" and "seeks."

I have seen the effects of that company's work in northwest China. Not a pretty picture. They have practically destroyed fantastic landscapes and the local population doesn't get nothing from their windmills. When I asked one local entrepreneur about how many jobs the windmills had created he said, maybe two local jobs - the company flies in all workers and material to the area where they build. Not even the electricity is available to the poor locals - its sold via direct lines to Beijing. Reply to the comment answer
