Detonation of first sea mines in Gulf of Finland postponed
20.11.2009, 15:14The plan to detonate the first sea mines on North Sea gas pipeline route in Finnish territorial waters this week was postponed, according to Finnish papers.
North Stream that is developing an undersea gas pipeline from Russia to Europe plans to blow up 36 sea mines in the Finnish economic zone.
John Lethbridge, the British vessel of BACTEC company is responsible for the blastings is already anchored on site.
In the Finnish economic zone in the Gulf of Finland, 14 old sea mines will be detonated in November-December this year and the remaining mines in April-May 2010.
Before a detonation an exclusion area with a radius of two kilometres will be set up around the location of the blasting. The ships operating in the area will be informed of the safety measures four hours in advance.
The first mine was scheduled for detonation already on Thursday.
