State-owned Port of Tallinn plans to turn its cruise passenger port in Saaremaa into a cargo port that would handle up to 300,000 tons of cargo a year, writes Äripäev.

The company has already filed an application to initiate environmental impact assessment and says that initial plans to keep the port serving only cruise vessels have not been fulfilled.

According to Port of Tallinn, the port is unique in comparison with other nearby ports because it is deeper, closer to large shipping routes and navigable all year round.

Also, the expansion of the port into a cargo port would enable to create up to 250 jobs, said the company.
