State: Estonia should have 10,000 electric cars by 2020

The government is drafting a plan by which Estonia would build up a fleet of about 10,000 electric cars by 2020, writes Eesti Päevaleht daily.

If this becomes reality, it means that one in every ten cars sold in Estonia in the next decade will be an electric one.

The plan is to make sure that the first 500 electric cars made by Mitsubishi that Estonia will soon get for selling its emission credits will not remain the only ones in operation.

Among others, there are plans to set up a subsidy system to allow private persons to buy electric cars at half the price.

These ideas are included in the government’s new Estonia 2020 action plan that the government is due to approve this Thursday and which says that the government should develop a system to increase the number of electric cars in Estonia to 10,000 by 2020.
