Estonian developer of geoinformation systems and maps Regio has in cooperation with the partners in Pakistan and Saudi Arabia developed a positioning app for Moslem pilgrims helping them to find the way to Mecca, the holiest city in Islam, writes Äripäev.

Ülo Säre, CEO of Regio, said that the company launched the application in just a few weeks.

“What else is unique is that while until now we have been marketing our products abroad through Ericsson, this project was implemented autonomously,” said Säde without specifying the cost of the project.

The pilgrimage known as the Hajj starts tomorrow.

Ivo Lõhmus, product manager of Regio, said that a month ago the organizer of the Hajj contacted them and asked if Regio would participate in a project involving the positioning of about 90,000 pilgrims.

Mecca is the birthplace of Muhammad, is regarded as the holiest city in the religion of Islam and a pilgrimage to it known as the Hajj is obligatory for all able Muslims.

More than 15 million Muslims visit Mecca annually, including several million during the few days of the Hajj. Non-Muslims are prohibited from entering the city.
