Editor: Latvian eurozone entrance would benefit Estonia 31.10.2012, 14:07
Anvar Samost, the executive editor-in-chief of Postimees daily, says that if Latvia were to join the eurozone in 2014 it would benefit Estonia, writes ERR News.
Speaking at radio on October 29, Samost said that Latvia has met the euro convergence criteria and that Prime Minister Valdis Dombrovskis' government may use the changeover to reassert the government's position in domestic politics.
The media expert believes Latvia, like Estonia, has much to gain from the changeover. Its economy is export-oriented and belonging to a greater currency zone is an advantage, he said.
Samost said that the euro would make transactions between Estonia and Latvia smoother and more transparent. Estonia would also benefit from another Eurozone ally, sharing and supporting common viewpoints "on many topics."
According to Samost, Eurozone members should convince Latvia the Eurozone is not a sinking ship but a safety zone whose members share a continued sense of belonging.
