Lithuanian FDI up 1.5 times in a year

In 2011 the foreign direct investment inflow in Lithuania was 1.5 times higher than in 2010, according to Statistics Lithuania and the Bank of Lithuania inform that in 2011.

Based on provisional data, in 2011 the FDI flow in Lithuania amounted to LTL 3 billion or 2.8% of GDP against 2010, up by LTL 1.1 billion, or 54 percent.

In 2011, the FDI flow accounted for 65% of the 2008 flow volume. In 2011, the FDI in Lithuania grew mostly due to an increase in reinvestment flow.

In 2011, the largest investment came from Sweden (LTL 3.8 billion), Canada (LTL 1.2 billion), the Netherlands (LTL 373.3 million), and Finland (LTL 331.2 million), while the most noticeable decrease in investment was observed for FDI from Estonia (minus LTL 2.2 billion), Denmark (minus LTL 648.9 million), and Luxembourg (minus LTL 498.8 million).

Over the last year, the largest investment was made in manufacturing (LTL 1.4 billion), financial and insurance (LTL 1.2 billion) and wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (LTL 200.5 million) activities. As for manufacturing, the largest investment was made in the manufacturing of basic pharmaceutical products and pharmaceutical preparations (LTL 499.2 million) and chemicals and chemical products (LTL 329.9 million).

As of 31 December 2011, cumulative FDI in Lithuania amounted to LTL 37 159.9 million (EUR 10 762.3 million). Over 2011, they increased by LTL 1.6 billion (4.5%). FDI per capita amounted to, on average, LTL 11 615 (EUR 3 364) (as of 31 December 2010 – LTL 10 958). The increase in cumulative FDI was determined by the share capital inflow and reinvestment.

As of 31 December 2011, the largest investment was made by Swedish investors – by LTL 5 741.1 million (15.4%), Polish – LTL 4 283.2 million (11.5%), German – LTL 3 873.0 million (10.4%), Dutch – LTL 3 272.5 million (8.8%), Russian – LTL 2 438.3 million (6.6%), and Norwegian – LTL 2 000.7 million (5.4% of the total FDI). Cumulative FDI in Lithuania from EU-27 countries amounted to LTL 27 957.4 million (75.2% of the total FDI), from CIS countries – LTL 2 656.5 million (7.1%).
